索书号: H319.4/2737

But man is not made for defeat...A man can be destroyed but not defeated.

The Old Man and the Seais written by the American authorErnest Hemingway(欧内斯特•海明威).One of his most famous workstells the story ofSantiago, anagingCubanfishermanwho struggles with a giantmarlinfar out in theGulf Streamoff the coast of Florida.

In 1953,The Old Man and the Seawas awarded thePulitzer Prize for Fiction(普利策小说奖), and it was cited by theNobel Committeeas contributing to their awarding of theNobel Prize in Literatureto Hemingway in 1954.

Highlights:

"But I try not to borrow. First you borrow. Then you beg."

"You'll not fish without eating while I'm alive." "Then live a long time and take care of yourself," the old man said.

Only I have no luck any more. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.
