Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre is a fascinating novel by English writer Charlotte Bronte(夏洛蒂·勃朗特), who has been acclaimed as “the first historian of the self-consciousness” and the literary ancestor of writers like James Joyceand Marcel Proust (詹姆斯·乔伊斯/马塞尔·普鲁斯特,二者均为意识流文学的先驱与大师,前者著有《都柏林人》,后者著有《追忆似水年华》Remembrance of Things Past) .
Jane Eyre contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism(阶级论), sexuality(性学), religion(宗教), and proto-feminism(原型女性主义).
Highlights:
Am I a machine without feelings? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? I have as much soul as you and full as much heart. And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you.
