The Scarlet Letter
About the author:
Nathaniel Hawthorne(纳撒尼尔·霍桑,1804—1864)is an American novelist and short story writer in 19th century. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic Movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism.
His themes often center on the inherent evil (原罪)and sin of humanity(人性的罪恶). His works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity.
Introduction:
The Scarlet Letter tells a story of a puritan woman Hester Prynne who is punished to wear a scarlet A which stood for the crime of adultery.
When it was published at first,The Scarlet Letter was defined as nothing but a coarse and vulgar book with ideas that would pervert the minds of readers. However, people have come to realize that it is a thoughtful book with great value and worthy of studying again and again. It reminds that, we women also have the right to pursue our love and happiness, and can be brave enough to live through any difficulties with strong wills.
